Woodland shelter
At British Log Cabins we are experts in all aspects of constructing log cabins and timber buildings, we are increasingly helping woodland owners to realise the full potential of their investment, from both a practical and personal level. We obtain planning permission for Woodland Shelters for our customers. We then build the handcrafted log shelters from the trees in their wood. The result is a stunning log cabin enabling the owner to achieve woodland management objectives and enjoy the recreational benefits that come with owning woodland while blending into and maintaining the surrounding natural environment. Below is a case study of one such project:
Woodland Cabin Structures: Chepstow, Gloucestershire
Remote, 26 acres of woodland and grassland. Positioned on a south facing bank, overlooking the Severn estuary.
Woodland - mixed broadleaf and conifer plantation with an area of ancient woodland.
Having received initial information from the customer, BLC proceeded with the
planning
application to the local council. This process was done through the completion of an
‘Application for prior notification of agricultural or forestry development - proposed building’
The Application:- A few of the steps and requirements for this application are listed below.
Proof of ownership
Location, with grid referencing
Total area of the land
Justification of the purpose of development;
Does it have an agricultural purpose?
Dimensions of the structure (having discussed directly with the client on initial consultation)
Construction materials.
The application was presented for public consultation for a period of 28 days, after which, notification was given on acceptance of planning.
This kind of structure is classed as a permitted development.
Further discussions then took place between the client and BLC, regarding terms and conditions - and following aggreeance, BLC drew up a contract to be signed before work commenced. This contract required the customer to hire a mini digger for the duration of the build, this was used to extract timber, lift timber and erect the footings.
BLC then moved on-site, selectively felling the timber. This took approximately 2 days. All timber was then extracted and moved to the shelter site to be stripped and sorted according to size. At this point, the footings were constructed using natural boulders found within the woodland. The hand scribing log construction process then started (Scandinavian saddle notch method) and the cabin was built to the agreed plans and spec. This took three of us 8 weeks to complete. The duration can vary due to weather. The customer was extremely happy with the finished product (pictured right). With a log burner fitted he is able to make use of his woodland year round.
